Professional Cleanings

Grey-haired patient relaxing while waiting for her dentist to perform a dental examGood oral hygiene is important for your overall health as well as for your social well-being. Maintenance of good oral health habits, such as brushing twice a day; flossing daily; using mouth rinses daily, is not enough to prevent the side effects of unchecked bacteria in the mouth. As part of the professional services offered by Peninsula Family Dental Center, dental cleanings improve oral healthcare by removing plaque and tartar build-up on the teeth.

Depending on your individual health status, this cleaning should be observed at least once every six months. However, it could be scheduled more frequently if our dental professional thinks you would benefit from more frequent cleanings due to your health status or oral risks.

Routine Cleanings

Routine cleanings, also known as prophylaxis cleanings, are recommended for all age groups. This is part of the regular checkup carried out during visits to the dental office. The teeth are examined and inspected. Plaque, tartar, and stains that form on the teeth are removed. Pain is rarely caused but can be induced when there are long periods between cleanings or there is inflammation present.

Procedure

Using a metal probe and a small mirror, the teeth are carefully examined for bite type, hardened plaque, erythema, edema, tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. If it is safe to proceed, a scaler is used to scrape tartar found on the teeth. The more the tartar has built up, the longer this step will take. Depending on the amount of tartar present and your health history, a manual scaler or ultrasonic scaler may be used. Next, a prophy angle - an electric toothbrush – will apply a gritty toothpaste, which contains abrasive agents, to remove stains and polish your teeth. This helps improve their overall appearance.

The teeth are then flossed, and a fluoride gel is placed in a mouthpiece that you are required to wear for the amount of time stated by our dental professional. Usually, you would be allowed to select your preferred flavor for the fluoride. Afterwards, you will have a fluoride-containing mouth rinse. The purpose of the fluoride treatment is to strengthen the enamel and prevent future cavities.

Examination of other facial structures, including the lymph nodes; salivary glands; mandible; palate; other soft tissues of the mouth, for signs of developing cysts or tumors, is carried out. The entire appointment usually takes between 30-60 minutes.
