Common Signs and Symptoms of Tooth DecayOur health is key to our happiness and our overall wellbeing; it is priceless. For that reason, we should strive to be as healthy as we can by maintaining maximum oral hygiene. Tooth decay is a prominent health issue among all Americans.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics database, 91 percent of American adults between 20-65 years old experience tooth decay and cavity issues at some point in their lives. Thirteen percent of children below 18 years old suffer the same fate. So, what is tooth decay?

Tooth Decay

Also known as cavities, tooth decay results from damage to our teeth when acid from our mouth's bacteria attacks our enamel. If untreated, it can lead to loss of the affected teeth. For proper maintenance of our teeth, dentists recommend flossing and proper brushing at least twice a day. We are also advised to avoid snacking between meals and consuming starchy and sugary foods or drinks. So, how do we know that we have cavities? Below are common symptoms of tooth decay.

Common Tooth Decay Symptoms

Prevention is better than cure. The earlier we detect dental cavities, the better. Regular dental checkups can help save our teeth before it is too late when the only option is tooth extraction. Common tooth decay symptoms include lingering sensitivity to sugary drinks, sweets, and hot and cold meals. Other signs of cavities are toothaches, tooth stains, and visible holes in our teeth.

It is not easy to detect cavity formation in its early stages. For this reason, we recommend dental inspection as often as possible. Consulting a dentist at least twice a year is crucial to our oral hygiene. For tooth decay treatment, book an appointment with our office, and we will leave you with a perfectly healthy smile.
