When Does Dental Damage Become an Emergency?

Posted on 7/26/2021 by Dr. Joe Mirci
When Does Dental Damage Become an Emergency? We've probably all experienced minor gum irritation because of flossing. Perhaps you have had a toothache, or a sensitivity to sugary food. These incidents are reasons to give our office a call even if you are not ready for your next routine professional cleaning and checkup. It is important to identify the cause of your discomfort. However, if you are experiencing a dental issue which requires immediate medical attention and treatment, this would be classified as a dental emergency.

Types of Dental Emergencies

Having a bad toothache is the most common dental emergency. However, there are worse things that can happen. If you have an avulsed tooth, also known as a knocked-out tooth, you need to seek our help immediately. Call us right away. When a tooth has been traumatically dislocated from the roots, it is important to try to find the tooth. If you can locate it, put it in a glass of milk or water. Try not to touch the roots or clean off the tooth.

Another type of dental damage that is classified as an emergency is a broken or severely chipped tooth. Again, find any pieces you can, and get to our office as soon as possible.

If you experience an abscess, or infection around the root of the tooth, look for a pimple-like swelling on your gum. If you see this, you need to seek help immediately as there is a serious risk to your oral and general health.
